How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram
Instagram doesn't notify you when someone unfollows you, so the only way to find out is to compare who follows you now with who followed you before. Freelytic is a free, no-login way to do that: it reads the follower list from your own Instagram data download, in your browser.

Does Instagram tell you when someone unfollows you?
No. Instagram's Help Center says that people won't be notified when you unfollow them. That works both ways: when someone unfollows you, you don't get an alert either. Removing a follower and blocking someone are also silent, according to the same Help Center.
Your Followers list in the app shows who follows you right now. It doesn't keep a record of who used to follow you, which is why you need an earlier snapshot to compare against.
How can I check if one specific person unfollowed me?
If you only wonder about one account, you don't need any tool:
- Open your profile and tap Followers.
- Type their username in the search box at the top of the list.
- If they don't appear, they no longer follow you. If their account can't be found anywhere, it may have been deactivated or renamed rather than an unfollow.
This is quick for one or two people. It doesn't work when you want to know who left, because you'd have to remember every follower you had.
How do I see everyone who unfollowed me?
Compare two snapshots of your followers taken at different times. Instagram lets you download your own data, including your followers and following, from Accounts Center. Freelytic reads that download and turns it into a clean list you can save.
Step 1: Save today's follower list
- Request your Followers and following data from Instagram in JSON. The download guide has the exact taps.
- Drop the ZIP on freelytic.ai. It's read in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
- Open the Followers tab and tap Export CSV. You get a file named like
freelytic-followers-2026-10-16.csvwith one username per row.
Step 2: Later, save a new follower list
A week or a month later, request a fresh download from Instagram and export the Followers CSV again. Keep both files.
Step 3: Compare the two files
Open both CSVs in Google Sheets or Excel, putting the old list on a sheet named Old and the new list on a sheet named New. Next to the first username on the Old sheet (cell D2), paste this formula and fill it down:
=IF(COUNTIF(New!A:A, A2)=0, "gone", "")
Every row marked gone was following you in the old snapshot and isn't in the new one. Swap the sheets to see who started following you in between.
Freelytic for iPhone, which is in development, will keep snapshots and compare them for you. Until then, the web analyzer stays free and the CSV method above works with any spreadsheet app.
Is recently_unfollowed_profiles a list of who unfollowed me?
No. If your Instagram download contains a file called recently_unfollowed_profiles, it lists accounts you unfollowed, not people who unfollowed you. Freelytic shows it in a separate “You unfollowed” tab so the two aren't confused.
What's the difference between “unfollowed me” and “doesn't follow me back”?
“Doesn't follow you back” means you follow someone who doesn't follow you, right now. You can see that from a single download, and it's the first thing Freelytic shows. “Unfollowed you” means someone followed you before and stopped, which needs two snapshots to prove. Many people who search for unfollowers actually want the first list, so it's worth starting there.
Are unfollower apps that log into Instagram safe?
Apps that show unfollowers instantly usually need access to your Instagram account. Instagram's Help Center warns that giving your login to a non-Instagram app, whether as a username and password or an access token, can give that app complete access to your account. Instagram also says accounts can be restricted when they appear to collect information in an automated way, and lists sharing your password with a third-party app as one possible reason.
We cover what Instagram's rules say, and how to check an app before you trust it, in Are Instagram unfollow apps safe?
Which way of checking unfollowers should I use?
| Method | Finds everyone who left? | Needs your Instagram login? | Effort | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search your Followers list | No, one person at a time | No (you, in the Instagram app) | Seconds per person | Free |
| Freelytic + two downloads | Yes, between the two dates | No | Two data requests and a spreadsheet formula | Free |
| Login-based unfollower apps | Usually, from the day you connect | Usually yes, or a login inside the app | Low once connected | Often free tier plus subscription |
